The challenge
Around the world, the use of drones is growing. These flying robots have evolved over the last years from gadgets to essential tools for certain businesses and the government. However, the residents of Rotterdam are being overlooked in this narrative. The drones collect an enormous amount of data, but the residents don’t benefit from it. “What if we could deploy these technologies in a way that benefits the residents of Rotterdam too?”
Design process
Commissioned by DronePort Rotterdam, I developed a concept through which residents of Rotterdam could help improve our analyzed city. I executed this entire project independently. The opinions of my fellow students and teachers ensured that I didn’t always work with tunnel vision. After my research and define phase, I stumbled upon a pattern. Drones capture detailed information about litter, but almost nothing is being done with this information yet. For me, the residents of Rotterdam were the missing link. By specifying my target audience to young adults with an interest in improving the environment, DroneSchoon Rotterdam came to life. The application guides you through different areas and neighborhoods in Rotterdam, highlighting places where you’ll see large amounts of litter. This way, the data from the drones is transformed into a greener Rotterdam, which makes this concept so special.
Result
DroneSchoon Rotterdam helps the residents of Rotterdam to pick up litter. When something is picked up, you can confirm your action and your achievements will be updated. You can also connect with other people online to see how much litter you've had picked up.
